VN 4th Largest Wood Products Exporter
Viet Nam was the world’s fourth-largest wood and wooden product exporter in 2015 with turnover reaching $6.9 billion, up 10.7% compared to 2014.
The export of wood and wooden products saw better performance than other key export sectors, according to the Ho Chi Minh City Handicraft and Wood Industry Association (HAWA).
Of its total exports, Viet Nam earned US$4.3 billion shipping wood-based products to foreign countries, up 7.8% from 2014.
The US, China, Japan and the EU remained the largest markets.
Exports of wood and wood-based products are expected to grow at a pace of 8 to 10% and stand at 7.2 to US$7.3 billion in values in 2016.
Meanwhile, Vietnamese wood products have secured a foothold in the domestic market. Demand for wood commodities is expected to surge in 2016 thanks to upbeat signs from the real estate market, especially the apartment segment in previous year.
Figures from the Viet Nam Timber and Forest Product Association show that in 2000 there were only 741 wood and wooden product enterprises in the country but the number has now increased to 3,934.
Many large-scale wood processing and export centers have been established in Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong, Binh Dinh, and Dong Nai provinces.
Given its potential, the wood and wooden products processing industry is one of Viet Nam’s major hard currency earners.
